Consent, Respect, and a Conversation on Manhood

| Uncategorized

Author’s note: This reflection was modified from a conversation with a friend who had experienced unwanted sexual advances. She was brave, stood against those advances, and made the world a bit better by fighting against the society that enables bad male behavior. Every human deserves to be respected simply by virtue of being a human […]

A Letter to my (White) Family, Friends, Neighbors, and Fellow Citizens

| Social Philosophy

(White) Friends, family, neighbors, and fellow citizens, I’ve seen your posts and heard your arguments speaking against the riots and destruction, against those who disrespect the flag and the country, and against the ideas of “socialism” and wealth redistribution. As someone who has been fortunate enough to have had access to (tax payer funded military) […]

What can we do about racism?

Editor’s note: I’m a man who benefits from white privilege. In the wake of the killings of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd, my wife broke into tears as she struggled to comprehend the enormity of the problem and her perceived powerlessness to affect it. Being Human and Being Good

I argued last week that happiness makes us more active members of the community. We need to maintain ourselves and take joy in what we do, to be open to other people, build community, and work on problems. Happiness gives us the energy to follow-through and to do what we think needs to be done.  […]

A Humanist Take on Abortion

| Social Philosophy

My position is that abortion should be cheap, completely legal, widely accessible, and an absolute last resort. Legal abortion should be supported by policies providing adequate sexual education, pregnancy prevention, and easier adoption. Furthermore, interests on all sides of the debate should examine where we can work to reduce the need for abortion in the first place.

Being Human Church – Focus

| Uncategorized

Every organization must have a focus and Being Human Church (BHC) is no exception. We can’t focus on everything; we can’t even be aware of everything. So there is a list of stuff we are unaware of (unknown length), a list of stuff we are aware of (pretty long), and a list of stuff we’re […]
